What is the buyback value of my books ?
Please check the buyback value of your books before you visit us. CLICK HERE to check the buyback value of your book.
When can I sell my books?
You can sell back your books year-round. Please contact the bookstore for more details. The best time, however, is during Finals Week. By this time, most instructors have told the Bookstore what books are going to be used the NEXT quarter.
The second best time is at the very beginning of the quarter. Mark the buyback dates in your calendar. Representatives from the used book companies are present during these dates:

How is a book's buyback value determined?
CLICK HERE to check the value of your textbooks. At buyback, books fall into 3 categories:
The Good Ones
These are books that instructors requested for the next quarter. The UCI Bookstore will give you 1/2 the NEW price for these golden beauties. A good deal for a book you've read, wrote in, and highlighted in four different colors. An even better deal if you bought a used copy because you still get half the new price. To be considered part of The Good Ones, the book does need to be free of water, soda, smoothie and mocha java spill damage.
The Not Bad Ones
These aren't going to be used next quarter or we're adequately stocked on them. The Bookstore contracts a wholesale book company to purchase them. This company pays you based on a national market price for each book (they'll sell it to another store at a school where it is being used). This usually amounts to 10-30% of the new price, depending on how popular the title is across the country. Remember the wholesaler must ship these books from our store to their warehouse, re-shelve, inventory, then re-ship them to another school. One reason for the lower price paid to students for these books is all the labor involved to resell them.
Since some classes are taught only once a year, The Not Bad Ones can become The Good Ones later. Remember, The Good Ones are good because an instructor is using it for class. So, if a class is only taught Fall quarter, then the book may not be a Good One until Buyback just prior to Fall quarter.
The Dreaded Additions to Your Personal Library
Books in this category just don't have resale value and unfortunately neither the bookstore nor the wholesale company can give you anything for them. This may be because there is a new edition of the book, there are too many copies in stock at the wholesale company, or nobody else anywhere wants to use it as a textbook. Keep it for reference or put it on your shelf to impress your friends (or parents).
Do publishers change book editions every few years just to eliminate used books?
Business issues are clearly a factor in determining the life of an edition. Publishers and authors do not get royalties from the sale of used books. Primarily the average edition-life of a textbook, which is two to three years, has shortened because the exponential growth of information has necessitated a shorter revision of cycle to keep books current.
How do frequent edition changes affect the Bookstore?
The UCI Bookstore understands the need for coursebooks to be kept current. However, we don't like the frequency of book revisions either. There would be more used books for students and fewer inventory problems for stores, if editions didn't change as frequently.
